There continues to be swift progress in our understanding of the Universe as a result of recent advances in Science. Pupils are continually being exposed to scientifically related media reports. It is the aim of our Faculty that we foster an enthusiasm and inquisitiveness as well as a broad knowledge and skills base that will equip them to debate and take an informed position on the many rapid technological, social and ethical issues that surround the scientific developments in this subject. As a result, the delivery of the specifications occurs around a scaffold of practical work in which the understanding of the scientific process; namely the development of ideas and theories and the skills of analysis are fostered. Scientific questioning, understanding and the application of pupils' current knowledge rather than the regurgitation of simple facts are encouraged.
Key Stage 3
Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught as separate subjects throughout Key Stage Three. Please refer to the subject pages for details of courses.
Key Stage 4
Our aim is to provide courses that optimise your chances of success in your GCSEs, prepare you for the sciences at AS and A level and allow you to keep open a wide range of options for Sixth form studies and Higher education. We offer two courses.
AQA GCSE Science B plus AQA GCSE Additional Science that will lead to the award of two GCSEs. A separate Sciences course that will lead to the award of GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Please refer to the subject pages for more details.
Our view is that the Science plus Additional Science course represents the most appropriate choice for the majority of pupils. As delivered at Tiffin School it offers a solid and rigorous grounding in Science whilst still allowing pupils to follow a broad and balanced curriculum.
Key points
Both course are designed to prepare you for success in all Science AS and A levels. You will not be disadvantaged if you choose the Science plus Additional Science course. Sixth form AS and A2 Science classes contain mixtures of pupils from both backgrounds.
In both courses Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught as separate subjects and delivered by specialist teachers. The schemes of work for both have been developed to provide significant intellectual challenge and stretch for all pupils.
The separate Sciences course is appropriate for pupils who have a particular aptitude for and interest in Science rather than in other areas and would, therefore, benefit from reducing the number of other GCSE optional subjects they take.
Key Stage 5
Science is a very popular subject and large numbers of pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics at AS and A level. Please refer to the subject pages for details of the courses.
