Mathematics
Students solving a problem
Tiffin students are, in general, very able in numeracy and Mathematics. Therefore the aim of the Maths department is to meet their needs as gifted students and to go beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum.   We do this by furthering their interest in the subject s exciting possibilities, enabling each student to gain the best possible Mathematics qualifications, and providing opportunities to see how rigorous thought and logic can enrich all curriculum areas.   We offer a high level pathway through the subject in all years, with great attention to Algebra.   In the Sixth Form, we are particularly proud to offer the most demanding options within the Further Maths course.

Key Stage Three
The focus is on Numeracy plus a careful teaching of early Algebra techniques. We cover all the National Curriculum for KS3 and move into GCSE work in several areas. The whole of year 8 go in for the UK Junior Maths Challenge this is a built-in part of our curriculum. We run a weekly lunchtime “Challenge Club aimed at KS3 pupils, a very popular club for students to be challenged by our games and puzzles.

Key Stage Four
All our students take “Higher Level GCSE (exam board Edexcel). We run an “accelerated scheme where 60 percent of students each year take GCSE early, achieving A* or A, and then move on to start A-level Maths plus some other extension activities. All of year 10 enter the Intermediate level of the UK Maths Challenge competition.

Key Stage Five
Maths is the most popular subject choice at A-level in Tiffin School. We regularly have more than 120 students per year group choosing Maths, including around 50 choosing A-level or AS-level Further Maths. Students choose Maths either because they want to specialise in a Mathematical discipline (Maths Engineering Physics Computing Economics Finance), or to support their Science choices, or as a valuable balancing subject to their Arts subjects. We achieve truly excellent results at A-level, with over 50 percent at grade A each year. Students participate in the Senior UK Maths Challenge, and we run special classes for Oxbridge entry.
